15. Sansa : The Sisters

Location: Waters of the Trident
Characters: Arya, Sansa, Joffrey, Mycah

Sansa, along with a huge party, are on their way to the Kings Landing. Today, she and her sister Arya were invited to ride with the queen and princess Myrcella in the royal wheelhouse. Sansa looked her best. Price Joffrey might be there. Just thinking about him made her feel a strange fluttering inside. Sansa did not really know Joffrey yet, but she was already in love with him. He was all she ever dreamt of, tall, handsome and strong, with hair like gold.

But Sansa was worried that Arya may ruin the day.
The two sisters were poles apart. Sansa was dressed up in beautiful delicate silks but Arya was wearing the same riding leathers she had worn yesterday and the day before.
Sansa was looking forward to riding with the queen but Arya just didn't care.
Sansa preferred travelling in the wheelhouse whereas Arya did not because it had no windows to see outside. But Sansa cared the least about the things to be seen outside. Arya preferred to ride on the horse, it allowed her to see the things on the way and allowed her to talk with squires, serving girls, soldiers and others in the party, whereas Sansa hated riding as all it did was get one soiled and dusty and sore.
Arya was carefree and wild as evident from incidences -
One day she came back all soiled and tattered, clutching a bunch of purple and green flowers for Father.
It turned out the purple flowers were poisonous and gave her rashes, so next day she rubbed mud all over her arms to stop the itching.

Sansa hoped that Arya would get a scolding from Father to behave herself like a highborn lady but Father only hugged her and thanked her for the flowers. That just made her worse.
Sansa felt that Arya preferred just about anybody's company but hers.

There is also a stark comparison between the wolves of the two sisters - how the animal takes after its master.

Sansa wondered why her sister couldn't be sweet and delicate and kind. She wondered if  Arya was a bastard, she even looked liked Jon.

The Kings party was joined by three Knights from the Kings Landing - Ser Barristan Selmy, Ser Renly Baratheon who was the handsomest man Sansa had ever seen, tall and poweful with jet black hair, clean shaven face and laughing green eyes, the third one was Ser Ilyn Payne, the King's justice/headsman, whose tongue was ripped out with hot pincers by Aerys Targaryan.

Sansa was terrified of Ser Ilyn Payne. Sansa also found The Hound terrifying with his burnt face.
The queen had a council meeting with the Knights and so Sansa got to spend the day with Joffrey.
What was this meeting about?

Sansa went riding with Joffrey even though she hated it just to please him. She thought her prince would never love her if she seemed stupid. Sansa and Joffrey had lunch and a couple of drinks in a nearby inn thereafter they rode out to the waters of the Trident.
There they saw Arya and the butcher's boy Mycah playing with wooden swords. Seeing this Joffrey tried to be a hero and dared Mycah how could he hit his beloved's sister. When Arya confronted him saying they were just playing Knights, Joffrey mocked the butcher's boy that he was no Knight and hurt him with his sword, the Lion's tooth.
Seeing her friend get hurt, Arya hit Joffrey with the wooden sword on the head. When Joffrey tried to attack Arya in anger, Arya's wolf Nymeria attacked Joffrey's arm. Arya snatched Joffrey's sword and threw it in the river. Sansa saw all this happen so quickly, she wanted to stop her sister but everything was ruined now. Joffrey was hurt and he was angry at Sansa. Sansa believed it was all because of her sister Arya.
