2. Catelyn : Death of Jon Arryn

Location: Winterfell's Godswood
Characters: Catelyn Stark, Ned Stark
Referenced Characters: Ben Stark, Robert Barathean, Jon Arryn,

Catelyn was born a Tulley of Riverrun. She is married to Eddard Stark and mother to Bran, Robb and 3 other stark children.
She remembers the godswood in Riverrun as :
"The godswood there, was a garden, bright and airy, where tall redwoods spread dappled shadows across tinkling streams, birds sang from hidden nests, and the air was spicy with the scent of flowers."

whereas the godswood in Winterfell are:
"It was a dark primal place, three acres of old forest untouched for ten thousand years as the gloomy castle rose around it. It smelled of moist earth and decay. No redwoods grew here. This was a wood of stubborn sentinel trees armored in grey-green needles..."

Catelyn was anointed with the seven oils and named in the rainbow of light that filled the sept of Riverrun. Her gods had names and faces and were worshiped using incense, a seven-sided crystal alive with light and songs. The old gods of Winterfell were nameless and faceless. Children of the forest had carved the faces in the trees during the dawn centuries before the coming of the First Men across the narrow sea. In the south, all the weirwoods had been cut down or burnt but in the North, every castle had its godswood, every godswood its heart tree, and every heart tree its face.

It has been implied that the heart trees can see:
"Red eyes of the weirwood seemed to follow her as she came"
"She could feel the eyes watching her"
"Red eyes watching,  listening, thinking its long slow thoughts."

Catelyn had no love for swords but Ned's sword Ice had its own beauty. It was forged in Valyria using hammers and spells before the doom came to Valyria. The sword was four hundred years old and as sharp as the day it was forged. It was named during the Age of Heroes when Starks were Kings in the North.

Ned's brother Ben, wrote to him that the strength of the Night's Watch is below thousand. They are losing men to desertions as well as rangings. They face a threat from the King beyond the wall.
What threat?
Catelyn also thinks that there are darker things beyond the Wall. But Ned thinks those are just Old Nan's stories. The Others are as dead as the children of the forest, gone 8000 years. No living man has ever seen one.
Royce and Will saw them and they both were killed. The Others exist beyond the wall.

Catelyn delivers the news of Jon Arryn's (Hand of the King) death to Ned. In his youth, Ned had fostered at the Eyrie and the childless Jon Arryn has become a second father to Ned and now King Robert Baratheon. Catelyn's sister, Lysa Arryn, was married to Jon Arryn and has now returned to Eyrie from King's Landing after Jon's death.
The King, along with a large party comprising of queen, his children, and the queen's brothers,  is coming to Winterfell.
Why?
His purpose is not revealed yet. There is small love between Ned and the queen's family, the Lannisters.
Why is there enmity between Starks and Lannisters?
Its mentioned that the queen's pride is said to grow with each passing year.

Another reference to the dead direwolf :
"a direwolf dead in the snow, a broken antler in its throat. Dread coiled within her like a snake"
It signifies an ill omen for the Starks. Stag is the sigil of House Baratheon and Robert Baratheon is coming to Winterfell may not be a good thing for the Starks.

Mentions of The Children of the Forest, Doom of Valyria, Age of Heroes, Kings in the North.
Mention of The Others been gone eight thousand years same as the children of the forest and no living man has ever seen a direwolf.
