4. Eddard : The Crypts

Location: Crypts of Winterfell
Characters: Eddard Stark, Robert Baratheon 

The King has finally arrived in Winterfell. He is accompanied by Queen Cersie, and her brothers. Ned had last seen the king nine years before during Balon Greyjoy's rebellion where the stag and the direwolf had jointly fought against the self-proclaimed King of the Iron Islands. Robert had accepted the rebel lord's surrender and Ned had taken his son Theon as hostage and ward.
What was the rebellion about?
Robert was a man of huge appetites, a man who knew how to take his pleasures. That was not the charge anyone could lay at the door of Eddard Stark. This implies Eddard Stark was too honorable.

The Stark kings were buried in crypts at Winterfell. The king proceeded to pay his respects to the dead much to the dismay of the queen. Robert was betrothed to Lyanna, Ned's sister who died. (Thats why queen was unhappy with Robert going to the crypts)

Ned recalls about Lyanna:
"I was with her when she died. Promise me. She had cried, in a room that smelled of blood and roses. Promise me, Ned. The fever had taken her strength and her voice had been faint as a whisper, but when he gave her his word, the fear had gone out of his sister's eyes. Ned remembered the way she had smiled then, how tightly her fingers had clutched his as she gave up her hold on life, the rose petals spilling from her palm, dead and black. Howland Reed, had taken her hand from his. Lyanna was... fond of flowers"
Why did she die?
What did she fear?
What did Ned promise her?
What is the significance of roses in her palm?
Who is Howland Reed?

Robert recalled "I vowed to kill Rhaegar for what he did to her"
What did Rhaegar do to her? He just died for the woman he loved according to Dany.

Robert told Ned about how Jon Arrayn died. A fortnight earlier, on prince Joffery's name day tournament, Jon was healthy but he quickly became sick and died. After his death, his wife and Catelyn's sister Lysa Arryn fled from King's Landing along with her son Robert Arryn.
Robert Arryn, Jon Arryn's son was to be fostered with Tywin Lannister at Casterly Rock.
Robert reveals the purpose of his visit to Winterfell. He wants Ned to be his Hand.
Robert suggests to Ned to marry Joffrey, his son and Ned's daughter Sansa.

Ned is reluctant to accept the king's offer:
"For a moment, Eddard Stark was filled with a terrible sense of foreboding. This was his place, here in the north"


Ill omens are indicated :

"The tombs were empty and unsealed, black holes were waiting for their dead, waiting for him and his children"

7. Arya : Needlework

Location : Winterfell Characters : Arya Stark, Jon Snow, Sansa Stark Arya considers her sister Sansa as someone who likes everything pretty and does everything prettily. Everybody said that Sansa's needlework was exquisite . Septa Mordane even told Catelyn that " Sansa's work is as pretty as she is ". For Arya she said " Arya has hands of a blacksmith ". Beth Cassel, master-at-arms Jory Cassel's daughter and Jeyne Poole, steward Vayon Pool's daughter were Sansa's friends. Arya addresses Jon Snow as her brother whereas Sansa consider him as their half brother and a bastard. As per Arya's thoughts, It wasn't fair. Sansa had everything. She was two years older.
