11. Daenerys : The Wedding

Location: Outskirts of Pentos
Characters: Dany, Khal Drogo, Viserys, Jorah Mormont, Magister Illyrio

This chapter is about Dany's wedding from her point of view where she learns about Dothraki.
Ser Jorah Mormont had offered Viserys his sword the night Dany had been sold to Khal Drogo.
The Khal had promised Viserys a crown but Viserys was impatient. Illyrio explained to Viserys that the Khal will have Dany first and after they are wed, he will make a procession across the plains to present her to the dosh khaleen at Vaes Dothrak. After that, if the omens favor war. The Dothraki are true to their word but they do things in their own time.

Viserys thinks of himself as the dragon. But Dany thinks that there are no more dragons. She however had dreams where Viserys was a dragon and attacked her.

During the ceremony, Viserys was seated below the Khal and Dany and felt insulted.
Dany and Khal had no common language. Dany did not understand Dothraki and Khal did not understand the Valyrian or the Common Tongue of seven kingdoms. Dany was afraid - of many things actually - she was afraid of Viserys's wrath and she was afraid of the Khal. She gained courage from saying to herself - "I am the blood of the dragon".

The Dothraki were violent and Dany found them monstrous and beasts.
Dany received her bridal gifts.
Viserys gifted her three handmaids - Irri (who had dark hair and was dothraki) , to teach her riding, Jhiqi, who taught her the Dothraki tongue, and Doreah, the Lysene fair haired girl to teach her womanly arts of love.
Ser Jorah gifted Dany some books written in common tongue about the seven kingdoms.
Magister Illyrio gifted Dany three dragon eggs from the Shadow Lands of Asshai. The years had turned the eggs to stone. The surface of the eggs was covered with tiny scales. One was deep green with bronze flecks, another pale cream streaked with gold and black with scarlet ripples and swirls.
Khal's bloodriders offered her three traditional weapons - Haggo gave her great leather whip with silver handle, Cohollo gave her a arakh in gold, Qotho gave her a double curved dragonbone bow.
Khal gave her a young filly. She was grey as the winter sea with a mane like silver smoke.
When Dany rode the filly, for the first time she forgot to be afraid. She felt as though the Khal had given her the wind.

Dany did not understand his words, but the Khal's tone had a warmth and tenderness she had not expected from his fierce looks.
They consummated their marriage under the stars.
