20. Eddard : Small Council

Ned Stark reaches KingsLanding ahead of the King's party and attends the first meeting of the small council. 
Members of the council included Varys, Littlefinger, Maester Pycelle, Renly, Stannis and Barristen Selmy.
The councillor Ned liked least was Varys the eunuch. He smell as foul and sweet as flowers on a grave. Why?
Lord Renly was always dressed immaculately, its said that he spends more on clothing than half the ladies of the court.
Lord Stannis had left for Dragonstone after king went north. Why?
Robert once mentioned to Ned that he was surrounded by flatterers and fools. Ned wondered who was what.
In the council meeting, it is announced that the king has asked to stage a great tournament in honour of Ned being appointed the Hand of the King. Littlefinger estimates the cost of the tournament at more than ninety thousand gold pieces. Also, crown was already in debt, owing Lord Tywin some three million dragons and more millions to Lord Tyrell, Iron Bank of Braavos and few Tyroshi traders. Ned decides to talk to Robert about this extravagant expense and adjourns the council.
After the small council meeting, Littlefinger takes Ned to Catelyn where she tells Ned all about the incident with Bran and the dagger.
On learning that the dagger belonged to Tyrion, Ned wonders why would Tyrion want Bran dead to which Littlefinger says that he did not act alone and the queen had a role too. Ned thinks that most likely the king did not know.
The accusation is treason either way. Accuse the king and you are dead, and queen if you find any proof and Robert listens..
There is no proof that Tyrion tried to kill Bran as he may very well say that the dagger was stolen from him.
Littlefinger also agrees to help Ned in finding out Jon Arryn's murderer.
Ned instructs Catelyn to return to Winterfell and write to his bannermen to strengthen their armies and keep an eye on Theon Greyjoy as if there is a war, they may need his father's fleet.
