Ned and Catelyn were in Catelyn's chambers when Maester Luwin came to them. The Maester was a small grey man. His eyes were grey, quick and saw much. He received a message. There was no rider. Only a carved wooden box, left on a table on his observatory. It was brought by someone in the king's party as there were no other visitors from south. Inside the box was a fine new lens for the observatory, from Myr by the look of it. A lens is an instrument to help us see. The true message was found concealed within a false bottom in the box. The message was meant for Catelyn as it had the moon and falcon seal of house Arryn. It was from Catelyn's sister Lysa, wife of late Jon Arryn. Location : King's Welcome feast at Winterfell's Great Hall Characters : Jon, Benjen Stark, Tyrion Lannister This chapter is from Jon's point of view. It is the King's welcome feast at Winterfell. Jon, being a bastard, is not allowed to dine at the king's table whereas his brothers and sisters , the stark children can. The feast started with Ned stark accompanying the queen to the table. Ned had last seen the king nine years before during Balon Greyjoy's rebellion where the stag and the direwolf had jointly fought against the self-proclaimed King of the Iron Islands.
